Reintegration Experiences of Male, African-American Dual-Diagnosed Parolees Re-entering the Community

For anyone concerned about criminal justice reform, it is a worrying trend that the number of offenders involved in the correctional system in the United States continues to increase, and that recidivism rates remain unacceptably high. Parolees with a co-occurring illness, of both mental illness and substance abuse, have the highest rates of reincarceration. In order to better understand how a dual diagnosis may contribute to recidivism, this study investigated the experiences of US parole officers who supervise African American parolees who have been diagnosed with both a mental-illness and substance abuse problem.

The author hopes that this book will provide insight into the structural and interpersonal barriers that prevent dual-diagnosed African American parolees from successfully reintegrating in society.
